Course Overview
Offshore installations and vessels operate in demanding environments where hazardous energy, marine movement, weather, simultaneous activities and limited emergency access can increase operational risk. Effective HSE familiarization enables personnel to recognise these hazards, follow safe systems of work and respond correctly when conditions change. It also reinforces compliance with maritime and offshore requirements, protects people and assets, prevents pollution and supports a consistent safety culture across vessel crews, offshore teams, contractors and shore-based support functions.
This course provides participants with an advanced, practical understanding of HSE controls used in offshore and vessel operations. Participants will learn to assess risk, apply permit-to-work and energy-isolation requirements, manage high-risk activities and contribute to effective emergency response. Designed to fit smoothly with our health and safety training courses matrix, this study aligns directly with standards taught in our oil and gas training courses portfolio. Participants will also strengthen their knowledge of fire safety, lifesaving equipment, environmental protection, maritime security, incident learning and human factors, enabling them to perform their roles with greater confidence, accountability and operational awareness.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain key HSE frameworks and responsibilities for marine operations.
- Assess offshore and vessel hazards using structured risk methods.
- Apply PPE, permit-to-work and hazardous-energy controls.
- Manage fire, electrical, lifting and line-of-fire risks.
- Follow safe practices for working at height and over water.
- Respond effectively to offshore and vessel emergencies.
- Apply pollution prevention, spill response and security measures.
- Promote safety through reporting, intervention and incident learning.
Target Audience
This course is designed for offshore personnel, vessel crews, marine engineers, deck officers, technical personnel, supervisors, operations coordinators and HSE professionals involved in offshore and vessel operations.
It is also suitable for contractors, subcontractors, maintenance personnel, project teams, logistics professionals, shore-based support staff and employees preparing to work in offshore or marine environments who require a structured understanding of HSE responsibilities and operational controls.
Training Methodology
The training will be delivered through instructor-led presentations, facilitated discussions, practical demonstrations, video materials and offshore-focused case studies. Participants will examine realistic situations involving work permits, hazardous energy, fire, lifting operations, working at height, emergency response and pollution prevention.
The programme will also include hazard-identification exercises, toolbox-talk simulations, permit reviews, incident analysis and emergency tabletop drills. Pre- and post-course assessments will be used to measure learning, while group activities will help participants apply HSE requirements to their roles and operating environments.
